Experts have analysed medical tests from the last few decades. The analysis has shown there is a link between reduced levels of selenium and an increased risk of heart disease.
The analysis looked at 25 studies that took place between 1966 and 2005. It showed that people with lower levels of selenium were more likely to suffer from heart problems. And a 50% increase in the amount of selenium in the body gave a 27% lower risk of coronary heart disease.
The authors of the analysis recommend that selenium supplements now be tested directly as a treatment for lowering the risk of heart disease.
