Researchers from King’s College University of London have shown that eating more blueberries can reduce blood pressure and improves the way blood vessels work.

The benefits of blueberries starts within hours of consuming them and lasts for weeks after the blueberry consumption ends.

The test subjects were given blueberry-based drinks whilst the control group were given a matched alternative (same sugar levels, etc but not blueberry-based). The researchers then measured blood pressure and flow-mediated dilation of blood vessels. The latter, abbreviated as FMD, is used as a marker for the subject’s risk of cardiovascular disease: the better the dilation, the lower the risk. So blueberries improving dilation reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease.

Blueberry consumption also reduced systolic blood pressure.
